A video call freezing during a client meeting, a card terminal dropping connection, or staff losing access to cloud files can all point to the same overlooked cause: network cabling. While Wi-Fi receives most of the attention, the fixed cabling behind your walls, desks and equipment is often what determines whether your business network performs reliably.

For small and medium-sized businesses, good cabling is not about buying the most expensive cable available. It is about creating an organised, tested and documented foundation for the way your team works now, with sensible capacity for what comes next.

Why network cabling matters to daily operations

Every wired connection carries business activity. Computers, phones, wireless access points, printers, servers, security cameras, door-entry systems and meeting-room equipment may all depend on the same physical network. If the infrastructure is poorly planned or badly installed, faults can be frustratingly difficult to find and can interrupt more than one service at a time.

A properly designed cabling system gives each device a dependable route back to the network cabinet. It also reduces reliance on wireless coverage in places where interference, thick walls or busy office layouts affect signal quality. Wi-Fi remains essential for mobile working, but access points themselves need reliable wired connections to deliver the speed and coverage employees expect.

If you expect to add desks, extend into another unit or introduce more cloud-based applications, spare capacity in the cabinet and additional cable runs can avoid disruption later. This does not mean paying for unused infrastructure everywhere. It means making deliberate choices where future change is likely.

Choosing Cat6, Cat6a or Cat7 cabling

Cable categories can sound like a simple race for the highest number, but the best choice depends on distance, speed requirements, budget and the rest of the hardware.

Cat6 is a practical choice for many offices. It supports Gigabit Ethernet over standard office distances and can support higher speeds over shorter runs. For businesses with typical desktops, phones, printers and access points, it often provides excellent value when installed to a good standard.

Cat6a is commonly chosen where 10 Gigabit capability is required across longer cable runs or where the business wants more headroom for high-performance wireless access points, servers or data-heavy work. It is thicker and less flexible than Cat6, so installation quality and space in containment need proper consideration.

Cat7 is sometimes specified for environments with particular shielding or performance requirements. However, the label can be used inconsistently in the market, and the benefit depends on the full system, including connectors, patch panels and active equipment. It should not be selected simply because it appears to be the newest option. A well-installed Cat6a system may be the more appropriate investment for many commercial premises.

The key is to specify the complete channel, not just the cable on the reel. Patch panels, data outlets, patch leads and testing must all support the intended performance level.

What a professional installation should include

Quality network cabling is largely hidden once the work is complete, which makes standards and documentation particularly valuable. You should be able to understand what has been installed and where each connection goes without tracing cables by trial and error.

A professional project normally includes a clear cable route, suitable trunking or containment, correctly terminated outlets, labelled ports at both ends, an organised comms cabinet and appropriate patching. Cables should be kept away from sources of electrical interference where possible and protected from damage. Poorly dressed cabinets and unlabelled sockets may look like small issues, but they make faults, moves and upgrades slower and more costly.

Testing is equally essential. Each installed run should be tested against the relevant performance standard, not merely checked to see whether a device connects. Certification records provide useful evidence that the installation was completed correctly and give future IT providers a clearer starting point if a fault develops.

If power is required for phones, cameras or wireless access points, Power over Ethernet should be part of the design conversation. It can reduce the need for local power adaptors, but switches must have enough power capacity for all connected devices. This is an easy detail to miss when new cameras or access points are added over time.

Common warning signs your cabling needs attention

Not every connection problem is caused by physical cabling. It could be a broadband issue, an overloaded switch, poor Wi-Fi positioning or a device fault. However, recurring problems in the same location deserve investigation, especially if the cabling has grown gradually over several years.

The following signs often justify a professional assessment:

  • Network ports work intermittently or only at slower-than-expected speeds.
  • Staff rely on daisy-chained switches, loose extension leads or cables running across walkways.
  • The comms cabinet has no labels, no available ports or a tangle of patch leads.
  • A move, refurbishment or expansion is planned, but there is no current network map.
  • Wireless coverage is inconsistent because access points are not positioned or wired correctly.

A review can distinguish between a targeted repair and a wider upgrade. Replacing everything is not always necessary. In some buildings, relabelling, testing existing runs, improving the cabinet layout and adding a few new outlets will solve the immediate problem. In others, ageing cabling or inadequate routes mean a planned replacement is the more economical choice.

Plan cabling alongside the wider IT system

Cabling works best when it is treated as part of an overall network design. Your internet connection, firewall, switches, wireless access points, backup approach and cybersecurity controls all need to work together. For example, fitting faster cabling will not improve performance if the switch only supports lower speeds, and adding powerful access points will not help if their wired links or power supply are inadequate.
